The International Theatre Institute (ITI) is an
international non-governmental organization (NGO),
established in Prague in 1948 by UNESCO and the
international community. ITI has national centers in
around 90 countries. ITI maintains formal associate
relations with UNESCO and is its principal
international NGO partner in the field of the live
performing arts. ITI has a cooperation and information
sharing agreement with UNESCO, and receives support
for certain international projects through the UNESCO
Culture’s Sector, Division of Arts and Cultural
Enterprise. The ITI General Secretariat is based at
the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
The Philippines was unanimously voted in the 30th
General Assembly of the International Theatre
Institute in Tampico, Mexico as the host country of
the succeeding congress. The performances and
interaction with Mexican children of the Chimalli
Choir, of the Earthsavers DREAMS Ensemble, a unique
performing group of disabled, disadvantaged and
indigenous youth honored by the UNESCO Director
General Koichiro Matsuura as UNESCO Artists for Peace
created an impact in the General Assembly of the ITI.
The 31st UNESCO ITI World Congress and associated
events will be held in Manila from May 17 to 31, 2006.
This huge international event in which 100 countries
will participate will place the country on center
stage.
